Assignment 2: Cameras

 Camera 1:

For camera 1, I used a small gift box (12cm x 5cm x 2cm) from the dollar store. I spray-painted the inside matte black to minimize reflections, and put the pinhole in the centre of the lid. Originally, I had the pinhole straight through box. Since the photo paper was so close to the pinhole, my images were quite small, so I made the hole bigger which greatly reduced the image sharpness. Then I just replaced the hole with a piece of aluminum can with a pinpoint through that, so I settled for the smaller images. Additionally, since the photo paper was so close to the aperture, I had to keep the exposure time very low (less than 5 seconds) in proper lighting.

Camera 2:

For camera 2, I used a couple of cardboard shipping tubes (each 7.5cm x 90cm). I did not need to spray-paint the inside of the tubes, but I had to apply lots of tape to the caps on each end and spray-paint them as well to keep the camera light-tight. Since the camera was so long, I was able to place a pinhole in the centre of one of the plastic caps and get a full image. When I used only one tube, I needed about 5 minutes of exposure time in proper lighting to get a good photo, whereas with both I needed over 15 minutes of exposure time to get an image. I was running out of daylight so even with 20 minutes, it was not enough to get a clear image. I imagine that, in proper lighting, it would take 20-25 minutes to get a clear image. For most of the photos, I cut the photo paper into circles to utilize the shape of the camera (as per David's advice).
